Andrew Young was a dairyman and horticulturist who moved to Brooks knowing full well what he was getting into. He eventually moved into the first house standing in Brooks, built by Jim Pierce.
Andy was born on a farm in Scotland and emigrated to Canada. He worked as a dairyman just south of Calgary, then moved down to Pollockville, where he occasionally hauled mail for Bob Pollock.
He homesteaded in several places before settling in Jim Pierce’s place with his wife Marjory. They had five children.
Andy had a bit of a green thumb and spent time over the years planting trees, shrubs and flowers. He had a knack for growing, and the grounds around his house were adorned with beautiful flowers.
Andy was recognized for his agricultural achievements in 1966, being nominated by P. D. Hargrave. (5, Mile 723: Brooks)
Andy Young was one of the first settlers to make his home in Brooks, and he contributed to the growth of the town by developing the land around it.
