Lois Valli: Gardener, Housewife... Poet?

  • Lois Valli was an artist who strove to overcome adversity when faced with hardship and sorrow.

  • Lois lived in the 1930s when farming was extremely difficult and the dust storms were insane. She lived with her husband on a desolate farm in the middle of nowhere.

  • Often by herself, Lois faced loneliness and depression, struggling to cling to any purpose in life. Raising three children in the midst of this, Lois was the epitome of a strong and resilient woman with “a stiff upper lip.”

  • She started expressing herself by writing poetry and began to bloom as she discovered that she was very artistically gifted. Her husband struggled to accept her artistic talents, making for more difficult times.

  • Lois said eventually said her time on the prairie “grew her up and formed her character.” Lois was a woman of remarkable strength; it seemed the tough prairie had an effect on her character after all.
